What Is Agrivoltaics?
Agrivoltaics (APV) is an innovative combination of electricity production from photovoltaic panels with simultaneous crop cultivation on the same land. Panels are mounted on elevated structures (3-5 m above ground), allowing agricultural machinery to pass freely beneath them.
Benefits for Crops
Counter-intuitively, partial shading by panels can improve yields for certain crops:
| Crop | APV Impact on Yield | Water Savings | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lettuce | +15-25% | 20-30% | Less heat stress |
| Potatoes | 0 to +10% | 15-20% | Stable yields |
| Wheat | -5 to +5% | 10-15% | Year-dependent |
| Berries | +10-30% | 25-35% | Hail protection |
| Grass/pasture | +5-15% | 15-25% | Ideal for grazing |
