    Many people believe that heat pumps only work in new, well-insulated homes. This is a myth — modern air-source heat pumps (monoblock or split type) work excellently with older buildings, provided proper preparation.

    The key to success is proper power sizing, potential thermal modernization, and adaptation of the existing heating system. At FNC Poland, we've completed dozens of such projects — from 1960s townhouses to 1990s homes with outdated gas boilers.

    Energy Audit — First Step

    Before deciding on a heat pump, a building energy audit is essential. It determines:

  1. Current heat demand (kW)
  2. Heat losses through walls, windows, roof, and floor
  3. Required system supply temperature
  4. Thermal modernization potential and expected savings
  5. Typical heat demand for older homes:

    Thermal Modernization — How Much Is Needed?

    You don't always need to insulate the entire building. Priority actions:

    Window replacementold wooden windows have U=2.5-3.0 W/m²K. New triple-glazed: U=0.7-0.9. Heat loss reduction: 15-25%.

    Attic/roof insulationcheapest and most effective. 20-30 cm of mineral wool reduces roof heat losses by 60-80%.

    Even partial thermal modernization (attic + windows) can reduce heat demand by 30-40%, allowing for a smaller (cheaper) heat pump.

    Choosing a Heat Pump for an Older Home

    For older buildings with panel radiators, the key parameter is maximum supply temperature. Modern air-source heat pumps can operate at:

  6. Standard — up to 55-60°C (COP 2.5-3.0 at -7°C)
  7. High-temperature (HT) — up to 65-75°C (COP 2.0-2.5 at -7°C)
  8. HT pumps cost 15-25% more but allow operation with existing radiators without replacement.
